Niina (Ninnu) Mäkelä
Family: Lives with Toni
Born in Eastern Finland, Valkeala. Lived in Turku and Helsinki regions, but ended up in Äkäslompolo. Education: wilderness guide and bachelor of social services. Worked in adventure tourism and also as an instructor in orphanage and youth detention centre.
Going to woods and enjoying nature has always been important. Has won the Finnish Championship in Wilderness Skills and Wilderness Paddling with her partner a couple of times.
Spends most of her spare time enjoying the great outdoors. In wintertime cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and downhill skiing. Last winter she found a new sport: gliding snowshoes, which is totally great! In summertime mountain biking, running and paddling. In autumns likes to knit woollen socks and to pick berries and mushrooms.
The joint life of Ninnu and Toni begun in wilderness guide school in 1998. After that they have climbed to many tops of Scandinavia and Mont Blanc together. They also paddled the entire Finnish coast from Virolahti (Russian border in south-eastern Finland) to Tornio (Swedish border in north-western Finland), 1350km in total.

Born in Western Finland, Pori. Lived in Turku and Helsinki regions, but luckily ended up in Äkäslompolo. Also spent many years abroad because of studies, jobs and hobbies. Education: Wilderness Guide and Border Guard. Worked as a guide in adventure tourism and also worked in the Finnish Border Guard as a Coast Guard.
Has spent a lot of time in the Arctic. Toni has skied to both: The Magnetic North Pole and the Geographical North Pole. He has also skied across Greenland both from east to west and from south to north, and hiked in Svalbard many times. Mountain hikes in Scandinavia, the European Alps, Alaska, Kenya, Tansania and Peru.
Hobbies: Many kinds of outdoor activities like mountain biking, paddling, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing. When travelling the world from Norway to Canada to Japan and so on, he has got a clear opinion on what he thinks is good accommodation for an outdoors person. The hobbies and working experience have given him a deep insight on outdoor and sports equipment. This knowledge will surely benefit our guests. With the correct gear every kind of outdoor activity is fun – regardless of the weather.
